Tax manager

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced tax professional to move into a varied general practice role. The varied nature of our clients will mean that you will be constantly challenged and continually gaining valuable experience.

You will join our tax team which has a broad client base. Your main role will be undertaking the preparation of tax returns for a mix of clients and assisting the tax manager with varied other tax work as it arises.  

Main job tasks and responsibilities

  • To have a strong working knowledge of and undertake annual tax compliance work to include the preparation of personal tax returns and partnership tax returns. Knowledge of trust tax returns would be an advantage but are not essential as training can be provided.
  • To be responsible for managing the statutory deadlines for tax compliance work and ensure work is completed to meet deadlines.
  • Assist with the preparation of the year-end tax letters for the firm.
  • To ensure work is being undertaken in the most efficient manner, being up to date with the most recent software developments and working methods.
  • To integrate with and help develop our established but rapidly growing tax team, which aligns with the company values, has strong team ethics with can do attitude.
  • Review work carried out by tax trainees and mentor the tax trainees.
  • Assist the senior tax manager in achieving team targets with regular and timely reporting back to the senior tax manager on results.
  • Provide ad hoc support to Directors and staff on tax queries.
  • To keep up to date with current tax legislation and assist with training the tax trainees.
  • To undertake any other tax work including advisory work that arises from time to time.
  • To have excellent client relationship skills, to be able to build strong relationships and handle client queries in a positive and client focused manner.

Candidates will need to:

  • Be qualified to AAT/ACCA/ACA or equivalent by experience

  • Experience of complex tax return preparation and willing to undertake new (challenging) tasks which may include complex areas of tax

  • Have good attention to detail and a methodical working manner

  • Ability to prioritise work and communicate with the senior tax manager and directors regarding workflow

  • At least 5 years’ experience of personal tax compliance work

  • Ability to manage multiple deadlines, external and internal

  • Excellent client communication and supervisory skills and a great work ethic

  • Ability to demonstrate a commitment to continuous improvement

  • At least 2 years supervisory experience

  • Intermediate to advanced knowledge of Excel spreadsheet development
